THE AUDICITY OF ASKING

Think Entrepreneurially

How does a start-up that wants to stick collars on stray dogs get funded by one of the top industrialists in India? How can you get a selfie with Prime Minister Modi and President Trump at the same time? How did a fourteen-year-old Steve Jobs get the parts to build a frequency counter?

In Chapter 6, we examine effectuation. It is a logic of thinking used by sometimes expert entrepreneurs who have built successful ventures. More importantly it can be used by your everyday problem solver to think entrepreneurially in the face of adversity. Saras Sarasvathy, professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, sums it up in a simple phrase: ‘do what you can with what you have’.

Zumba is term synonymous with a dance workout. It all began when an aerobics instructor forgot his regular music tapes for a work out session he was conducting. With only salsa tapes in his car, Beto Perez improvised and told the participants that he had a ‘special class’ for them. Beto’s journey involved three pillars of entrepreneurial thinking: bird in hand, crazy quilt and pilot in the plan.
